Part 4, Chapter 16 Summary: “Calvin”

Calvin insists Grace needs to see Dr. Reed, the community physician. She is carried to his truck, and he thinks, “She was a stubborn woman, which is also what I liked about her. I enjoyed being challenged” (92). He takes her to Dr. Reed, who examines her and asks questions, some of which she has trouble answering. Falling asleep at the house, Grace dreams of Calvin’s taxidermized animals attacking her. Calvin wakes and comforts her. She reminds him that he promised her a massage, which he proceeds to give her. During the massage, someone pounds on the door—new County Sheriff Almond. He questions Calvin about Briana Becker, an Airbnb guest who intended to check into the ranch a week before Grace. Calvin says he does not recognize her picture, that she never showed up. Grace is again troubled by Lisa’s underwear in her dresser, the nightmare-like woman’s scream, and now, the missing Briana.

As he buys more beers, Charlotte joins him at the bar, having seen Joe’s truck outside. The four talk, drink, and play pool as two teams. When a favorite song comes on the jukebox, Charlotte drags Calvin to the dance floor and Joe asks Grace to dance. Separated during the dance, Calvin sees Grace push and slap Joe. Part 3, Chapter 12-Part 6, Chapter 30 Analysis

In this section, Rose introduces and develops several minor characters who play significant roles. The first of these is Charlotte, Calvin’s friend who longs for his love. In an uncanny way, she shows up wherever Calvin is—coming to the farm to collect eggs, stopping by the tavern, and interrupting Calvin and Grace in the kitchen. Similarly, Calvin’s brother Joe shows up at inopportune moments—including arriving unannounced while Grace sunbathes in a bikini and interrupting Calvin and Grace’s first kiss in the kitchen. Betty, Calvin’s surrogate mother, asks Grace invasive questions, while Charlotte’s ex-husband Wyatt answers questions regarding Sheriff Almond’s investigation. While unique, the minor characters embody The Universality of Secrets. With their burdens come personal agendas. Overall, this section resembles a mystery more so than the first section—establishing suspects for future crimes. However, the suspects are also victims: For example, Calvin takes advantage of Charlotte’s romantic love and Betty’s maternal love to act as he pleases. The novel is selective in which information it reveals through its alternating first-person perspectives to conceal Calvin and Grace’s true colors.

As for the novel’s crimes, the first is some minor characters’ attempts to disrupt Grace’s vacation and send her home. Charlotte in particular believes Grace and Calvin are not suited for each other, largely due to her own love for him; she even seeks Grace out to inform her of a past fling with Calvin. Joe claims he does not want to come between Grace and Calvin, but warns her not to get involved with his brother. These characters exhibit a mix of overt and subtle disruption, as reflected in quotes related to Calvin’s possessiveness over Grace and the possibility of her permanent stay in Wyoming. On the other hand, some characters hint at more heinous crimes—as if confessing or warning Grace to leave the ranch for her own safety. Upon learning Briana is missing, readers are meant to form connections as Grace does. While she suspects Calvin, she also theorizes Charlotte might have abducted Briana to rid herself of a rival suitor. As for Calvin, he worries that without medication, Betty might be capable of kidnapping. Overall, Rose shifts the novel’s tone from that of a relatively light-hearted romance to a mystery with no clear crime bar the missing Briana—though the section ends with Grace and Calvin enjoying a night beneath the stars, thus reclaiming the romance genre. However, the next chapter disrupts this tender moment, again reminding readers of the novel’s true genre.
