Chapters 27-29Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Chapter 27 Summary: “Alexa’s Follow-Up”

Erin and her crew film Alexa’s release from prison. Unlike Holli, Alexa thrives in her freedom and new possibilities. During filming, Mark calls with exciting updates about the business he’s building. Hector, an associate, will join Mark as a partner, and Erin feels things will truly be all right now. That night, she falls asleep “smiling like an idiot” (224). Erin accompanies Alexa to a fertility clinic the next day, where Alexa’s ability to get pregnant looks promising. Erin’s relationship with Alexa moves from professional to personal. Alexa fits well into the new life Erin is forming, and Erin cares “very much what happens to her next” (226).

Chapter 28 Summary: “Strange Things”

Erin goes to Penton Prison to prepare for Eddie’s interview the following day. On her way out, a man named Patrick stops her wanting to know why she’s there. Erin explains the documentary, feeling annoyed the prison isn’t on top of things. After the man walks away, Erin realizes the man “didn’t mention his surname” (229). Her paranoia returns with the knowledge an unidentified stranger knows her name and where she’ll be the next day. She double checks with the prison, but no one named Patrick works there, leaving her to wonder if he’s associated with the plane.

When Erin gets home, the back door of the house stands open. Mark would have never left the door open, which means someone else is or was in the house. After searching, Erin finds no one. The diamonds are still in their hiding place, but someone stole a photo of her and Mark. There are five new messages on the answering machine. One is Alexa, and the rest sound like someone was calling to catch them out. Erin recognizes the location of the last message as somewhere nearby. Whoever left it was in her house.

Chapter 29 Summary: “Strange People”

When Mark gets home, Erin tells him everything except her suspicions about Eddie having her followed and the pregnancy. Turns out, Mark moved the photo and never put it back. He rationalizes Erin’s visitor outside the prison as being related to Holli and overall seems far less concerned than Erin expected him to be. Mark convinces her to drop Holli’s interviews to distance them from the investigation. Erin agrees but can’t bring herself to agree with the rest of Mark’s logic. Her gut tells her the strange messages are related to the bag.

Later that night, Mark says they should dump the diamonds. Erin doesn’t understand why because Mark “was so concerned about our finances before” (239). She wants to try to find one more way to sell them, and Mark reluctantly agrees. Erin goes to bed feeling like “something is closing in” on her (241).

Chapters 27-29 Analysis

Alexa’s promising ability to get pregnant mirrors Erin’s current pregnancy. Their shared desire and realities of becoming mothers brings them together, foreshadowing the role Alexa takes on in Erin’s life after Mark’s death and betrayal. Alexa symbolizes Erin’s new life and growth as a person. Erin’s relationship with Caro was shallow, much like that part of Erin’s life. With Mark’s supposed love, the bag, and her pregnancy, Erin matures and accordingly brings more mature friends into her circle. Alexa’s calm confidence and comfort with herself reflect what Erin wants for herself. Alexa replaces Caro’s role in Erin’s life.

These chapters add layers to Mark’s deception. Chapter 28 introduces Patrick, who we learn later was hired by Mark to follow and scare Erin. Patrick represents an increase in Erin’s attention to detail. At first, she believes his role as a prison employee, but with just a little bit of thought, she realizes his story doesn’t make sense. Her suspicions grow faster and with more authority than they did in previous chapters. Erin also learns later that Mark was also responsible for the missing photo, open door, and answering machine messages. His lax attitude about these details worries Erin. In keeping with her quick-thinking regarding Patrick, she doesn’t quite believe Mark’s unconcerned attitude regarding the suspicious events. She isn’t yet consciously aware of it, but she knows something is wrong between her and Mark here.
