Part 2, Chapters 31-34Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Part 2, Chapter 31 Summary: “The Eavesdropper”

Katherine runs to the museum, where she explains everything to Bevis in a rush. A Third Class apprentice overhears part of the discussion and realizes that Bevis and Katherine are the people who infiltrated the Guild of Engineers the night MEDUSA was tested. Katherine reveals her plan to attend a party at the guild hall with her father and sneak away to destroy MEDUSA. Bevis says she’ll need a bomb to destroy MEDUSA and offers to build her one. The eavesdropper runs to tell Crome Katherine’s plan.

Meanwhile, Valentine searches in vain for Katherine. He’s ashamed of the choices he made, but it’s too late to undo their effects. He knows Katherine’s right that Crome is doing terrible things and wishes that “he had the courage to stand up to Crome the way she wants him to” (316).

Part 2, Chapter 32 Summary: “Chudleigh Pomeroy Sees It Through”

Bevis finishes building the bomb and fits it in a satchel so that Katherine can take it to the party. Shouts echo from somewhere in the museum, and the Engineer security team thunders up the stairs just as Bevis and Katherine step out onto the landing. They arrest Bevis and Katherine for conspiring to destroy MEDUSA. They’re taking Katherine to the party and sending Bevis back to the Deep Gut, making Bevis squeak with fear. Katherine protests that Bevis was only acting on her orders, but her voice sounds frail, like “a child caught playing some stupid, naughty trick and protesting at its punishment” (322).

The Engineers drag them down the stairs, where they find the Historians armed with old weapons and blocking the doors. Pomeroy demands that the Engineers release Katherine and Bevis, and when the Engineers refuse, the Historians fire their ancient weapons, taking down the Engineer force. With only a half hour until MEDUSA fires, the Historians send Katherine and Bevis up a long-forgotten stairway so that more Engineers won’t find them.

Part 2, Chapter 33 Summary: “Wine and Nibbles and the Dawn of a New Era”

Valentine arrives at Crome’s party, where he learns about the struggle at the museum and Katherine’s involvement. Valentine wants to rush to her aid, but Crome forbids it. Valentine obeys, realizing that all this time he’s been nothing more than a coward and that “all his adventures and expeditions have only been attempts to hide himself from this truth” (336). Meanwhile, Tom and Hester approach in the Jenny Haniver, and Katherine and Bevis climb up the old stairs, closing in on both the party and MEDUSA. Tom gets close enough to London that Hester can jump to the city before he flies away, hoping against everything that he’ll see her again. As soon as she lands, Crome gets a message that someone might have boarded the city. He sends a newly made batch of Stalkers to deal with her, ordering them to bring her back alive.

Part 2, Chapter 34 Summary: “Idea for a Fireworks Display”

Tom doesn’t get far before the 13th Floor Elevator deals the Jenny Haniver a blow. As the huge airship circles around to finish him off, Tom remembers how a rocket broke the 13th Floor Elevator’s windows. Tom fires his remaining rockets through the windows. The 13th Floor Elevator bursts into flames and plummets like “a vast Chinese lantern tumbling down toward the lights of London” (349).

The 13th Floor Elevator crashes just feet from where Katherine and Bevis sneak along. Bevis pushes Katherine from harm’s way but is killed as the ship barrels over him. On another platform, Hester is thrown by the blast. She sees the wreckage and believes that it’s the Jenny Haniver and that Tom is dead. As she gets to her feet, she finds a group of stalkers bearing down on her, and above it all, sees the “dome of St. Paul’s […] starting to open” (352).

Part 2, Chapters 31-34 Analysis

These chapters are the climactic sequence leading up to MEDUSA’s misfire and London’s destruction. Reeve makes use of jumping back and forth between different characters’ points of view to increase the tension and maintain ambiguity about who will survive and who will die. Final motivations and realizations become clear. Bevis’s death makes Katherine even more determined to stop Crome and destroy MEDUSA. Meanwhile, Valentine realizes that he made a mistake. He cares more about Katherine’s safety than her status—but Crome is beyond listening to reason.

The battle in Chapter 32 shows the past and future colliding. The Engineers believe that they’re the most powerful guild—but they’re taken down by the Historians’ determination. Ancient, less powerful weapons are just as effective as more powerful modern ones. The hidden staircase symbolizes the importance of preserving the past. Elevators and lifts made the staircase obsolete in London’s everyday existence, but its presence here allows Katherine to continue her mission without facing the Engineers and Stalkers, for whom she’s no match.

The 13th Floor Elevator’s demise in Chapter 34 foreshadows London’s downfall. Despite the airship’s armored plating, it has a weakness, which Tom exploits. The aftermath of the airship’s fall allows the important characters to converge at MEDUSA’s location. In the ensuing mayhem, Katherine makes her way to St. Paul’s, and the Stalkers capture Hester, taking her to the cathedral as well.
