Chapter 25 Summary

Matt and his neighbour Carla are getting high while Matt ponders the idea of reporting the Tres Camarones crew to the border patrol. He says, "Red, white and blue...these colours...don't...run" (238). However, he admits to "swooping on” on one of the girls, either Nayeli or Yolo.

Atomiko's narration reveals that he likes the USA for its cleanliness, and yet he misses his little hut by the dump; he built it himself. The description of its construction demonstrates his innovation with junk materials. He often nursed stray puppies back to health and so he often had "guard dogs" that hung around his hut. He admitted that it was a good life.

We move to Chavarin reminiscing of his former life in Tres Camarones where he described himself as “a fire on two legs… [and a] human waltz and a walking tango" (241). In his pondering, we realize his longing for his hometown and the special magic that it holds for them all. He admits that spending this time with the warriors has “made him understand how alone he was” (242). Chava visits with the crew at Matt's house and then takes them to another Mexican migrant worker named Angel. He once was a member of the Mexican Navy and Chavarin feels he would be best suited for fighting bandidos.

On the way they stop at a grocery store to pick up supplies; Chavarin explains that it is a very difficult place to live. Nayeli marvels at the quality of the food and the huge cereal aisle. While there, two intimidating young white men corner them and ask if they are illegals, because "they have standards" (247). Chavarin rescues them by hitting the men with the back of his cart and escorts Tacho and Nayeli out of there. "’some people’," Chava noted mildly, "’don't like us here’" (249).

Chava prefaces their visit to the camp and sets the tone by reminding the youth that they are in "the richest country in the world. This is the richest gestate of that rich country...and this is probably the richest city of the richest state of the richest country" (248). The camp has improvised tents and a makeshift shrine to the Blessed Mother.

The men that live in this camp work by picking flowers and in different seasons, fruits and vegetables. While talking with the other migrant men that live there soon, Angel arrives, along with Sully and Jimbo, the intimidating white men from the grocery store. Angel had been found by them at the water. Sully calls it an "immigration rally".

In the “Battle of Guadalupe” Atomiko and Nayeli stand up for themselves; Nayeli understands enough to know that Sully and Jimbo are saying awful things about her. Atomiko does not understand the meek, fearful behaviour of the other border crossers. He ponders: "How subservient could you get? They all hung their heads and acted Iike they were wringing their hats in fear of these gringo thugs" (252).

Nayeli, Atomiko and Angel fight off the thugs all on their own. Tacho helps by cracking one over the head with a baseball bat. Nayeli turns to Angel at the end of the brawl and asks him if he wants a job.

They return to Matt's place. Nayeli is so excited to tell Yolo that they had three men, until she walks in on her having sex with Matt. Carla tells her that her Aunt has called and said she is in town.

Chapter 26 Summary

Nayeli broods over all the romantic links that have been established on this journey, and she has never felt more alone. "Of all the threats of the journey, Nayeli had never imagined romance would be the most ruinous... Her world was coming apart."(260). The only thing that remains for her is Kankakee, and finding her father.

They meet Irma at a hotel and she is less than satisfied with the men the youth have found. Nayeli goes to Don Chava's to bring him to Irma. He is ashamed and does not want to see her, but Nayeli encourages him and he gets ready. She tells him it is up to him and Irma to find the rest of the seven, as she will be leaving to find her father.

Irma books a conference room at the hotel, and they will conduct interviews for the remaining four men they will need. Upon meeting, Atomiko assumes protection of Irma and although his behaviour is silly, she is impressed by his moves. However, La Osa cannot convince Atomiko to come to Sinaloa.

Back at Matt's place, Matt helps to plot out the trip to Kankakee, Illinois, cautioning her and Tacho where to stop and visit (like a tourist vacation) as well as how best to avoid check stops.

Chapter 27 Summary

The drive through the desert is incredibly boring for Tacho and Nayeli. The radio stations rage that Mexicans do not belong, that English was the only language for the country. The variety of the radio stations is slim: "Country music. Talk radio. Sports talk. JEE-sus" (268).

When they arrive at Las Vegas, “at first [Nayeli] couldn't stop laughing. It was as absurd as her childhood fantasies of dream cities - it only lacked flying carpets and gassy airships" (272). They wander the strip and Tacho gets "coin slot fever". They checked in at their hotel with the pseudonyms Shakira and Ricky Martin. The next day they "could not believe that in the light of day the electric wonderland of the night before was just a big pile of ghastly cement and cracked sidewalks" (274).

Chapters 25-27 Analysis

While budding romances would seem to be a welcome turn of events to this story, Nayeli is left alone, along with Tacho. She leads Chava to Irma and is content to leave the crew on their own to “finish” the job. If this whole journey has taught her anything, it is to rely on herself and trust her own instincts. This is proven in her impressive leadership “win” at the Battle at Guadalupe. If it had not been for her and Atomiko taking charge, Angel nor Tacho would not have been inspired to fight for themselves. It would be a shame to give up now when they had come so far, and so it was not just a battle for preserving Tres Camarones and their own lives; it was a fight to maintain their dignity. However, Nayeli has led them far enough and now it is her turn to pursue her individual interests, not just saving Tres Camarones.

The mood of the story seems to be on a downward slope again. Much like all the other illusions that have been shattered in this story, Las Vegas looks very different to Nayeli and Tacho in the daytime. It no longer holds the blinding, magical appeal it once did and with that new understanding of America, they continue on their journey.
