Part 3, Chapters 68-72Chapter Summaries & Analyses

Part 3, Chapter 68 Summary: “College Bound”

Enchanted finds Gab’s boyfriend, Jay, and asks if he can help her get in touch with Gab. Jay says that he has no idea who Gab is, or what Enchanted is talking about. Enchanted gets another text from Korey, asking her to “Give [him] one night of [her] and this will all go away” (278). Enchanted realizes that Korey will never leave her alone.

Part 3, Chapter 69 Summary: “W&W Meeting Minutes”

The mothers of the other Will and Willow members try to suspend the Jones sisters’ membership, but Mrs. Jones argues that her daughter did nothing wrong. The mothers are divided: some blame Enchanted, stating that “She walked right into his house,” and “Girls are smart. They know what they doing” (280). Mrs. Jones reminds them that they all had secrets they kept from their mothers when they were young, and what happened to Enchanted could easily happen to any of their children. After some convincing, the mothers of the group agree to help Enchanted.

Part 3, Chapter 70 Summary: “Interrogation #2”

In a second meeting with detectives, Enchanted and her mother learn that Korey is accusing Enchanted of leaking the sex tape. He denies stalking her, and there is no evidence to prove otherwise. The detectives also reveal that Korey is married, and he is using his wife as an alibi. Finally, they “checked with the school. There’s no student by the name of Gabriela Garcia” (287). They ask if Enchanted has ever had a mental evaluation, and Mrs. Jones cuts the interview short.

Part 3, Chapter 71 Summary: “Who is Gabriela?”

Back home, Enchanted listens as her mother and father ask Shea about Gabriela. Shea doesn’t know anything, and Enchanted tries texting Gab, but with no luck. Enchanted listens as her mother blames herself for all this: “First [she] didn’t want [Enchanted] to sing, then [she] couldn’t go on tour with her, now [she doesn’t] know [Enchanted’s] friends” (290).

Part 3, Chapter 72 Summary: “How to Buy Back Your Life”

Enchanted calls Jessica and asks her to relay a message to Korey: “[she’ll] give him what he wants” (292). She goes to Korey’s penthouse, and he gives her a purple drink. Enchanted notices that Flounder is on the dresser of the bedroom, and as they both drink, Korey shows her the original sex tape. Suddenly, Korey “is on top of [her], hands everywhere” (294), and he tells her that he is still paying her family’s bills, so she owes him. Korey hits her, and “the room goes dark” (295).

Part 3, Chapters 68-72 Analysis

The final chapters of Part 3 bring the action of the story back to the opening pages of the book: the reader now knows how Enchanted got into Korey’s penthouse, and all about the events leading up to Chapter 1. However, the mystery lingers: what happened between Enchanted passing out and waking up to find Korey murdered in his bed? Enchanted is still the prime suspect, although there might have been someone else in the apartment. In Part 4, the final pieces of the puzzle will come together. Jackson uses nonlinear plot, an unreliable narrator, and missing blocks of time to build suspense going into the final chapters of the novel. In addition to building suspense, these narrative strategies cause the reader to question Enchanted’s version of events, even as the reader has witnessed her trauma unfold. The simultaneous suspicion of and sympathy for Enchanted that the reader may feel emphasizes Jackson’s portrayal of the difficulties that victims of abuse face in finding support, and the complicated feelings they may have about sharing their stories because of uncertain social consequences. Even the reader, who has a more intimate understanding of Enchanted than any of the characters, may begin to doubt her.

Part 3 shows Enchanted backed into a corner. She wants Korey to leave her alone, but the police won’t believe her, and she doesn’t know if Gabriela was a real person or a figment of her imagination. A pile of evidence (or lack thereof) seems to be stacking up against her. Mental illness runs in Enchanted’s family, and the detectives believe that this makes Enchanted an unreliable witness. Desperate to put an end to this nightmare and “buy back” her life, Enchanted agrees to see Korey one more time. Korey’s final act of violence against Enchanted reinforces her belief that she will never be free of him until he is gone forever.
