Part 2: “Fangs”

Part 2, Chapters 57-64 Summary

In the skirmish, Max is awed by Tisaanah’s ferocity; he sees her as “[a] goddess of death and vengeance and utter, indiscriminate destruction” (393). Tisaanah’s mind is taken over by Reshaye; she attacks anyone in her way, including Max. He tries to distract and weaken Reshaye but is no match for the entity. Finally, Sammerin uses his powers to immobilize Tisaanah’s body. When she awakens, Tisaanah learns that the raid was a success. However, she notes that she is being treated differently: “They were afraid of me. Witch, their shuddering thoughts said. Monster” (403).

That night, Tisaanah wanders out to a hillside and watches the stars. She is joined by Max, who talks about the aftermath of hosting Reshaye. It took him years to get past the devastation of the war. When he saw that some people are still trying to do good, he planted his garden to create life instead of death. Tisaanah gave him the same feeling of hope. Tisaanah reflects the same feeling back to him: “You are the best of men, Maxantarius Farlione, no matter how much you try to convince the world otherwise. Promise me that you’ll keep fighting your battles even if I lose mine” (408). After this declaration, she kisses him.

Max and Tisaanah have sex, joyfully connecting physically. Though neither wants the experience to end, they separate before dawn to prepare for the next stage of their journey. In the morning, Reshaye accuses Tisaanah of betrayal: “{I gave you what you wanted and you gave yourself to HIM. The two of you conspiring against me}” (425). Tisaanah tries to mollify the entity by reassuring it of her love, but it remains suspicious.

Part 2, Chapters 65-72 Summary

As the party advances on the Mikov estate, Zeryth announces that he must leave because of urgent business in the Capital. He assures Tisaanah that she can accomplish her mission without him. Zeryth has asked Ahzeen to host a party, ostensibly to receive a delegation from the Orders, so gaining access to the palace will be easy. Tisaanah savors avenging her past mistreatment: “Every powerful Lord in Threll would be there. All in one room […] And how poetic it would be, to devour Esmaris’s legacy where it had once devoured me, little by little, night after night” (431). The plan is for the Syrizen to teleport the enslaved workers out of the estate while Tisaanah offers a distraction.

Ahzeen welcomes the delegation and doesn’t recognize Tisaanah. The group toasts to Ahzeen’s recent victory over rival Threllian Lords. Much to her relief, Tisaanah sees Serel among the soldiers at the back of the hall. He sees her too and guesses why she is there. As Tisaanah performs a dance, conjuring butterflies to the amazement of the guests, two Syrizen transport enslaved people away.

However, Tisaanah cannot resist making her vengeance known. She baits Ahzeen until he finally remembers who she is. She prepares to attack him with her magic but is shocked to realize that her powers have been neutralized. Their glasses of wine have been laced with Chryxalis, a drug that prevents Wielders from using their abilities for hours. Ahzeen expected a sneak attack from the Orders and took the necessary precautions.

As the rest of the delegation is dragged away by Ahzeen’s soldiers, Ahzeen hauls Tisaanah to his father’s study, where he intends to kill her using Esmaris’s whip. Tisaanah tries to reach Reshaye, who is lurking in the depths of her mind. She finally succeeds, summoning the entity to the surface and allowing it to take control of her. Then, Reshaye uses Tisaanah’s body to wreak havoc, killing Ahzeen and unleashing her fury on his assembled guests. Meanwhile, Max and Nura struggle to fight off their guards.

Part 2, Chapters 73-77 Summary

After Max and his companions free themselves, they must battle the soldiers without the benefit of magic. However, Max has a secret source of power, transforming into a “massive serpent that wove through the air and the crowd, its body made of flames that ran together like water, sparks glinting as scales on its skin” (464). Max enters the ballroom in his serpent form and tries to reach Tisaanah, but Reshaye remains in complete control.

Inside her mind, Tisaanah tries a new tactic to reach Reshaye. Instead of resisting the entity, she dives deeper into the darkness of her mind to confront Reshaye directly: “No more dividing myself up as an offering to more powerful monsters […] no more would I fail to unleash the full potential of the power—my power—at my disposal” (474). Tisaanah takes control of the entity and harnesses its power for her own use, no matter how Reshaye resists. Conscious again, Tisaanah recognizes Max even in his snake form. She draws a Stratagram on the floor using her own blood, transports the two of them away from the estate, and collapses. Hours later, Tisaanah awakens to find Sammerin tending to her wounds. He assures her that Max is all right and that the enslaved people have been rescued. Serel comes to her chamber, where the two friends share a tearful reunion.

Part 2, Chapter 78-Epilogue Summary

The serpent form that Max has kept secret from everyone was a parting gift from Reshaye—a snide reference to Max’s fear of snakes. When Max explains this to Tisaanah, she realizes that the cloudiness in Max’s blue eyes is actually a thin reptilian membrane covering his irises. Max has always kept it closed to prevent his inner serpent from emerging. Now, he understands that accepting its presence gives him the power to use it.

Nura informs Tisaanah that the group must now return to Ara. When Tisaanah asks a pointed question about Zeryth’s orchestration of the party, Nura concludes that Zeryth only wanted Tisaanah to learn how to fight with Reshaye and didn’t care about anyone else: “Possess or destroy. You’re either a tool or a threat—and in this case, we were all both” (493).

That night, Reshaye rises to Tisaanah’s consciousness, feeling more connected to its Host than ever. The feeling is mutual, as Tisaanah now relishes the power at her command: “{Our story is not complete, Daughter of All Worlds.} A caress writhed against my mind. And my lips twisted into a smile. Not long ago, I would have been afraid. Not anymore” (496).

On the return journey, Max imagines a future that would never have occurred to him without Tisaanah. Tisaanah considers how much she has changed in only six months: “I am a free woman and yet still a slave. I am fragments of many things but a whole of only myself. I am a daughter of no worlds, and all worlds. And I am not done yet” (501).

Back in Ara, Zeryth and the royal Valtain advisor Tare urge Queen Sesri to attack a possible conspirator named Lord Laurel, but the queen insists that they find another way. Outwardly, Zeryth acts surprised by this sudden burst of assertiveness, but inwardly, he isn’t worried because the queen’s behavior suits his plans perfectly. As he walks back to the Towers, Zeryth congratulates himself on acquiring both Tisaanah and Max, “two outrageously powerful weapons at his disposal” (505), and on securing a powerbase in Threll. In his office, he composes a letter to Nura: “By the time you read this, he wrote, Sesri will be dead” (506).

Part 2, Chapter 57-Epilogue Analysis

The novel ends with several characters reaching their objectives, fueled by The Desire for Power. Tisaanah, armed with the magic of the Orders and the viciousness of Reshaye, returns to Threll, successfully frees her fellow enslaved workers, and rescues Serel. Zeryth obtains a Host for his weapon, establishes a foothold in Threll, and schemes to murder the queen. To a lesser extent, Ahzeen wages war on the other Threllian Lords and captures the Aran delegation. After these endeavors are successful, each character faces an even greater dilemma: How do you keep hold of the power you possess? One option is to crush all opposition and destroy any rival threat. Ahzeen does this by defeating rival Lords and making a show of his authority, using his new Aran captives “to illustrate his dominance to all these people he so desperately want[s] to impress” (448). His ascendancy is short-lived, but the tactic is adopted by Tisaanah and Zeryth as well. Tisaanah, emboldened by Reshaye, attacks anyone involved with enslaving her with brutal force. It is not enough to slaughter everyone in her path—she also demands recognition, first from the man who first captured her and then from Ahzeen. Zeryth is on a similar path, though the stakes he is playing with are much higher: The rival he is about to crush is Queen Sesri.

Personal Transformation is key to the novel’s ending as well. Max literally changes into another body, becoming the powerful serpent that he has attempted to keep hidden ever since he stopped being Reshaye’s Host. This external manifestation represents the psychological evolution he has undergone during the novel: No longer entirely haunted by his war crimes, Max embraces the potential for a better future, a relationship with Tisaanah, and both sides of his existence—human and snake. Tisaanah’s transformation, on the other hand, is more worrisome. She enjoys unleashing her fury on those who have wronged her and makes a bargain with Reshaye that requires her to accept and even love this interloper in her psyche: “In my panic, I threw at it the only thing I could think to offer. The thing it wanted most of all. The thing that I had always sold in exchange for the safety of myself or the people I cared for: I love you. I love you, Reshaye” (426). In some ways, while Tisaanah feels that her newfound power gives her the freedom to fight, she is actually once again enslaved. Once in this trap, neither one knows how to escape.

The ending thus sets up several threads for sequels to explore. First are the ramifications of Tisaanah’s power hunger. Tisaanah recalls the advice of Serel’s grandfather: “Every moment in life was a coin with one dark side and one light. They fell on the ground with one side facing up, but the other always lay beneath it, there, but hidden” (495). The key to mastering power is to embrace its ever-present darkness. However, the danger for her is the temptation to become this darkness exclusively. Zeryth’s ambition has led to a coup and regicide, setting him up as the next antagonist for Tisaanah to face. Finally, the fact that Reshaye is so desperate to be loved raises the question of whether this entity really is simply a sentient magic force. The fact that Tisaanah has been able to empathize with its pain foreshadows the revelation that Reshaye is actually a former Fey.
