Chapters 136-170 Analysis

These chapters explore the practical aspects of meth addiction in greater detail. One of the biggest questions that Kristina faces is how to access drugs in Reno. The quest for meth keeps her on the lookout for new contacts. When she notices Trent’s cheerleader sister Robyn at Scott’s company picnic, she files Robyn away as a possible source. It can be inferred that Kristina even flirts with Brendan and Chase to build a new network. The fact that her hunches about Brendan, Chase, and eventually Robyn prove true highlights the ubiquity and easy availability of drugs in Reno, which is borne out by America’s real drug epidemic. Drugs are not just used by those society considers “others,” but also by high school students, cheerleaders, and lifeguards. Hopkins shows how easy it is for Kristina to tap into the network of drugs.

Kristina’s troubled relationship with herself as a sexual being is apparent in the way she views her flirtations with Brendan and Chase. She portrays these flirtations as transgressive, calling herself a “vamp” and a “shameless flirt.” Her distorted self-image makes sense when she adds that girls watch her flirtatious behavior “as / [she] [her]self ha[s] often done, / with evil eyes” (249). She is keenly aware of the sexual double standard: A flirtatious boy is seen as a stud, but a girl in the same role is seen as morally compromised. The Difficulty of Finding an Identity clearly has a sexual component for Kristina.

Marie becomes a more complex character in these chapters. While she is well-meaning and loving, she also tends to be superficial when it comes to judging someone’s character. Kristina shrewdly notes that Marie will think Brendan is a good person just because he looks the part. Marie’s instant, baseless approval of Brendan foreshadows Brendan’s terrible treatment of Kristina. Marie’s strict parenting style can backfire, as it does when she grounds Kristina for getting the tattoo. Being grounded further alienates Kristina from Marie and also gives her more time to “think…plot…get even…for time lost…partying with the monster” (260). Kristina’s deteriorating relationship with Marie parallels her growing dependence on meth. When Marie jokes that Kristina is consistent because she bought many similar-looking outfits, Kristina privately notes how her mother hardly understands her anymore. Kristina is anything but consistent now. However, it is difficult to say if any other parenting style could have prevented Kristina from using drugs. Her father is far more permissive than Marie, and Kristina began experimenting with drugs under his watch. Hopkins shows that there is no clear-cut way to support a loved one dealing with addiction, adding a layer of nuance to the theme of Family and Addiction.

As Kristina’s addiction grows, her behavior becomes more reckless, as seen in her decision to go out with Brendan. Though Kristina portrays her recklessness as a moral problem, it is more of a sign of The Complex Nature of Addiction. It is a known medical fact that meth use changes one’s brain over time, so users seek the drug despite knowing the consequences of drug use. In this context, Kristina is not acting unethically; she is acting compulsively because of a disease she cannot control. Thus, she ignores the red flags around Brendan’s predatory sexual behavior and goes out with him in the hope of getting crank.
