Silas provides a reasonably comprehensive biography of Glenn Burke interspersed throughout the novel. Burke (1952-1995) is famous for being both the first openly gay player in Major League Baseball and for being the inventor of the high five. The story of the high five is somewhat debatable. It may have been Burke and his teammate who first high fived, though the gesture can be seen in some earlier pieces of media like Breathless, a French film from 1960. After Burke came out as gay, no other MLB player followed his lead until Bill Bean came out in 1999, four years after Burke’s death. Though Burke’s life was far from easy, he is remembered as an important figure in both sports history and LGBTQ+ history.
The Sandlot, a 1993 American movie set in 1962, also forms the backdrop of the novel and is a major piece of baseball history. It centers on a group of fifth-grade boys who form an unofficial baseball team. Baseball helps them connect to each other and understand the value of friendship and teamwork. Although the film received middling reviews, it has become a cult classic. The Sandlot is the most important piece of media in Silas’s life, except perhaps YouTube coming out videos. He often quotes the movie during baseball games and practices, and he dresses up as the characters to amuse his teammates. His enthusiasm seems more intense than his teammates’, though all of them are familiar with the plot and characters.
A High Five for Glenn Burke is about acceptance and inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in the world of athletics. Silas feels that his own life parallels Glenn Burke’s story, since Burke was essentially ousted from Major League Baseball because people did not accept his sexuality. Silas does not get forced out of baseball, but he does experience anti-gay sentiments from some of his teammates, and he is aware that some authority figures like Coach Noles disapprove of efforts to make sports more inclusive. Silas does not come out to his teammates in this book. It is unclear whether he will experience pushback or discrimination if he does later come out, or if people like Coach Webb will be able to help create an accepting space for him.
There are other contemporary issues facing LGBTQ+ people in sports. Today, a related issue is transgender people, including trans children and teenagers, playing sports. There have been several high-profile cases of people harassing athletes either because they are transgender or because they are suspected of being transgender (Szeto, Winston, and Brady Strachan. “9-Year-Old’s Gender Questioned in ‘Gobsmacking’ Track-and-Field Incident, Family Says.” cbc.ca, 14 June 2023), as well as laws banning trans people from participating in sports (Freking, Kevin. “House Approves Trans Athlete Ban for Girls and Women’s Teams.” apnews.com, 20 Apr. 2023). Some organizations are tracking these laws and actively campaigning for greater inclusivity for everyone in sports (“Bans on Transgender Youth Participation in Sports.” lgbtmap.org).
